History

Provo was named after the French-Canadian explorer, Etienne Provost, who along with his party, explored the area in 1825. He named the Provo River after himself. Then in the year 1849 settlers moved here from Salt Lake City under the direction of Brigham Young. John S. Higbee led 33 families (150 People)  a difficult three day journey from Salt Lake City to the Provo area., after hearing reports of the Provost explorations. On April 3, 1849, the pioneers began building a fort on the south bank of the Provo River three miles east of Utah Lake, then in 1850, the settlers moved further east toward higher ground where they divided four acres blocks into home site parcels. A new railroad connection was completed between Provo and Salt Lake City around the year 1875. Brigham Young University, established in the year 1877, helped train teachers for the establishment of Mormon communities. Provo City became the county seat for Utah County on January 31, 1850.
